What is Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period?

Every year, insurance companies make changes to their current plans that can impact the out-of-pocket costs for medications or co-payments, provider availability or pharmacy networks. That’s why it’s recommended to reassess your current medical needs and lifestyle changes and compare it to what your plan is currently offering. The good news is that you’re not locked down to your current plan and have the availability to explore other options during Medicare’s Annual Election Period, which runs from October 15 – December 7. If you select a new plan during this period, benefits will start January 1 of the new year.

Traditional Medicare plans offer Part A and Part B, which cover the basics such as doctor visits, hospital coverage and medical insurance. You can get all of those and more with a Medicare Advantage plan that also covers prescription drug management, dental coverage, vision coverage, transportation and wellness benefits. Did you know you can join a gym, get groceries delivered to your home or even receive transportation to doctor visits through some insurances? You will not be missing out on any traditional Medicare benefits by selecting a Medicare Advantage plan and you’ll be getting more in return by switching during the Annual Election Period.

Who Is Eligible for Medicare?

  • People who are 65 or older
  • People with certain disabilities
  • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

What plans do you need?

Consider what medications you’re currently taking or if you have a specific doctor you want to keep as your primary provider. These details will help narrow down your list of options. Keep in mind that as you get older your needs progressively change, so it is important to consider a plan that will better protect you in the future.

Do I have the right providers for the care I need?

Take this time to reevaluate the current care you’re receiving and if it’s the right care for you. Medicare’s Annual Election Period is the perfect time to choose the right doctor.

To find out if you are getting the care you deserve, ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you happy with the service your current clinician is providing you?
  • Do you have to wait weeks or months to schedule an appointment?
  • Do you spend a lot of time in the waiting room once you’ve arrived at your appointment?
  • Do you feel rushed like you don’t have enough time to meet with your provider?
  • Are you having a difficult time getting referrals processed, having your questions answered, etc.?
