How Coronary artery disease (CAD) affects older adults.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when plaque — a mix of cholesterol, fat, and other substances — builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. When the arteries narrow or become blocked, the heart can’t get enough oxygen, which can cause chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, or worse — a heart attack.
CAD is the leading cause of death worldwide, but it often progresses slowly and silently over years. The good news is that it’s highly manageable. A heart-healthy lifestyle, medications, and sometimes procedures like stents or bypass surgery can improve blood flow and quality of life.

Just 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can significantly reduce your risk of coronary artery disease — and boost your mood, too!
